Adam Gidwitz Author Visit

Adam Gidwitz came to our school one day to talk to us about his books! He wrote grim fairytales and other fictional books. He didn’t talk all about books though, he had a sense of humor and talk to us about how he was in quick sand!  He also talked about a spy book he wrote. I’m pretty sure it was about a kid during the the nazis and he was on a train leaving his home and he heard these voices from little people on his shoulder that only he could see. It was partly based on his family friend who lived in Germany and was in the time of world war 2. The book is called Max in the House of Spies.

Planetarium Field Trip

Last Friday my grade went to the planetarium in Chappel Hill. Since the Field Trip didn’t take all day, we had our first 2 classes, men were history and then Spanish. Then we got on the busses and it was around a 20 minute drive.

(Taken by my teacher)

Once we got there we went into different groups and walked around the UNC campus. Then we went into this building where there were a bunch of science exploring areas kind of like the life and science museum.

(Taken by my teacher)

Then we ate lunch outside. After we all ate we went to this science show which was fun! The science guy showed cool experiments about the 3 laws off motion. He also showed cool things about liquid nitrogen.

(Taken by my teacher, this was lunch)

After the show, we went to the planetarium which was cool! We saw one of there “movies” about mars. After that we went back on the busses to carpool.

NIFs!

Last weekend I went to the national indoor field hockey festival. I went home to grab my stuff and then my mom and I started driving to Virginia Beach. This tournament was closer to the beach so it was really windy. When we got there it was around 9 by the time we checked in but we didn’t leave till 6 because I forgot to pack because I just said I would do it the next day. The next morning I had to wake up at 5 am! Our game started at 7 and we had to be there by 6:30. I was so tired and it was freezing outside!

Once I got there they put this wristband on and my coach said I couldn’t take it off till our last game was over on Monday. We warmed up and played our first game. Unfortunately we lost both of our games. Both games we were playing U14 which was an older group. There was also a Photo Booth there, this is a picture of us taking a picture at it.

After our games my team and I planned a team lunch because it ended around lunch time at a place called Watermens. One person’s mom on our team printed out a scavenger hunt for us. The owners said that we couldn’t do it anymore because we were running around and harassing people because one of the things on the list was take a selfie with a stranger. We stopped and since we were done eating we all left. A lot of people on my team including me stayed in the Westin hotel. At the Westin they had a indoor pool so we all went swimming! I unfortunately don’t have any pictures of the pool:(

The next day we woke up at 7:00 am and we got there and won both of our games! I also scored a goal! The first game we won 1-0. The 2nd game we won 6-0! When we finished we went to watch the U14 game and then once we left we all went swimming again then we went to the lobby and ate pizza. After that it was still early so we decided to go to the gym there and we just sat on yoga balls and played around. After that we went back to our hotel rooms. This is a picture of us watching the U14 game.

All photos by our families

The next morning our games weren’t until 11:00 so me and my teammate went out to get breakfast then when it got closer to our games we were going to go back to our rooms to get ready but there were lots of people by the elevator and turns out they were doing a testing on the elevators so nobody could go in! So me and my teammate had to walk up 13 flights of stairs! Also we couldn’t come back to the room because we checked out at 12:00 and our games ended later than that so we were going to have to bring all our luggage down when we came back down. It was so tiring and it was right before our game but we made it! Then my friend was ready before me and the elevators were still down so she had to walk back down 13 flights of stairs! Luckily the elevators were working right when she got down so I got to take the elevator.

After those games we all went to another team dinner at a mexican restaurant. Not everybody could come though and one person who was not on our team came. Outside there was a big heart structure bench. We took this photo there.

Before we went on I couldn’t find my stick! I looked everywhere but I couldn’t find it! Luckily someone on U14 let me borrow there’s. At the end of the tournament I bought a new stick. We were just about to play and we were about to start when all the sudden the fire alarm went off! We all had to evacuate the building and fighter fighters had to come in. Fortunately I think it was just mistakenly pulled because in about 15 minutes we could go back in and we went back to our game. This was our last game of the indoor season and we won! We had some really good goals and won 4-1. This is a picture of the first fighters coming in the building.

A photographer also took a picture of me playing  which I think is really cool.

after that we went straight home and was a fun trip! I can’t wait for more tournaments!

Lynchburg Field Hockey Tornement

Last weekend my team and I went to Lynchburg, VA for a field hockey tournament. we played 4 games in total. What was really annoying is that the first game we were white and then after that our next game we were black so we had to switch our jerseys and socks. We had 1 hour ish in between each game which I got sort of impatient sometimes and just wanted to play.

My mom and I woke up at 5 am and drove 2 1/2 hours there once we were there we were confused about were it was and where to park because there was multiple different buildings I saw one of my coaches and she showed us where to go.

My team is U12 (under 12) and we were playing up with U14 so I think we did pretty good considering that. The first game we tied 0-0 the inbetween games we changed, got food, and just hung out. then our second game we won 4-2! I also scored 2 goals! The next game we lost unfortunately but it was close. The last game we lost by a lot because they kept getting corners and scored on those so next practice we worked on our defensive corners.

After that we drove back home and had a really good time!

Here is a video of me scoring!

My comic!

In my LA class we read a bunch of short stories and then we got to choose our favorite and we turned them into comics!

I chose the story Antlers which is about a deer who doesn’t like his legs because he thinks there too skinny and ugly. Then out of know where, a hunter comes behind him and tries to shoot him, luckily he barely escapes and after that, he realized his legs are the things that saved him from being killed! He loved his legs from then on. This was my comic that I made on Comic Life 3.

What I’m proud of in Science Class

In science class, we were learning about circuits and electricity. Our teacher told us we had to think of a place like a house, restaurant, store etc. then, we come up with a schematic that will involve at least 3 working lights, a motor, a buzzer and a safety switch that’ll turn everything off at once.

We got chosen random partners to work on this and our idea was an disco party kind of theme so we planned that we would use the motor as a disco ball by putting some foil on the motor, having 3 lights on each side of a cardboard box that we would get, and a buzzer.

It took us lots of editing and reforming to find a schematic that would work. When we got our box things didn’t go as planned in our schematic and some wires were connected to the wrong spot so we had to look back at our schematic and see what went wrong and fix it.

Photo of my project by me

We also had 2 weeks to complete this but we didn’t have science class everyday so we just had a couple of classes to do the wiring and complete the project.

Once we finally had the wires in place and everything was working including all of the switches we had to decorate. We made a disco ball out of foil and put it on the motor, we colored a dance floor for the bottom. We planned on doing lots of more decor but we ran out of time since the electrical wiring took most of the time so it doesn’t look the best but it works.

This is a video of our project

the sad part was were we had to destroy all our word work at the end and put back all the materials. 🙁

this was overall a very fun project and took lots of thinking!

Cayman Islands

Hi! Im going to talk about my vacation I took last summer to the Cayman Islands.

we went with 3 other family friends. We stayed at a really big house with a pool and it was nice because the beach was close!

(From the website VRBO)

The next day we also went on a yacht to see some places in the water, we saw stingrays, starfish and we also went snorkeling!

The next day there was this center that had dolphins so we got to swim with the dolphins  which was really fun!

We also went to this really clear ocean and it was so cool because you could see big fish where you can still stand and and there were also big groups of fish close by too! It was also weird because there was no wakes or current! But since the water was so clear we saw big shells. on that same beach we rented some cabanas but it started raining really hard and the lifeguards made everybody get out of the water but we did eat during that time.

This trip was really fun and I had  a great time!

Thanksgiving

Since Thanksgiving happened I’m going to talk about things I’m thankful for.

  • my family
  • My friends
  • My education
  • Having opportunities to do different things.
  • My house
  • my dog
  • things I need like enough food
  • Living close to a lot of restaurant and other things.
  • good health
  • My grandparents

Fun fact: Did you know that thanksgiving started in 1621 and was a three day festival?  It also originally started in mid October.

🎃Halloween 🎃

Hey everybody! Im going to talk about Halloween. I’m doing a group costume with 7 people ( some people didn’t come to the party but did the costume for school) and we are going to be aliens. Every Halloween my family hosts a Halloween party. We like to host a Halloween party because are neighborhood gives a lot of candy. my favorite Halloween candy is probably Twix but I like mostly all Halloween candy. Did you know that Halloween originally came from early settlers and they carved turnips? Americans later changed it to pumpkins instead of turnips.

First we waited for everyone to get here when people arrive. My friends and I who already were there jumpscared them through the window. It was really funny to see them and once we accidentally scared an adult who came. After everyone finished eating dinner and it got darker outside, we left to go trick or treating. It was really cold but we stayed out for a while. Towards the end of trick or treating there was a group of people who went to the candy baskets and dumped the whole thing in their baskets which was kind of annoying because then we couldn’t get any candy but eventually they left.

Later…

We went back to my house and went upstairs to trade and look at all our candy. We all dumped our baskets and started trading. We also had a contest where we each got sour warheads so we ate them at the same time and you had to try to keep a straight face. It was pretty easy and nobody made a face. I also have an aerial silk in that room so we were playing on that too. Soon they left but one of my friends stayed for a little longer and we played on the silk for more. Once everyone left, I cleaned up my candy mess. We had lots of leftovers for the food so it looks like I’m having leftover Greek food for lunch for a long, long time.

Thank you for reading! (Got info about Halloween history from wikipedia.)

Gymnastics

Hi! I started doing gymnastics in pre-K. I was originally in pre team but then they put me in bronze JO (Junior Olympics). After  a little while it didn’t seem very fun anymore and I decided to stop. I started to miss my teammates and coaches so I decided to start again. I was put in bronze and then I moved to silver. I went to competitions and got to travel to many places. I also went to states competition which was a lot harder than any of my other competitions. I think I did the best in a competition in Savanna, Georgia.
